Here is part of a reply to Offensive Commercials to Women-hidden esteem triggers

...HOWEVER - the reason why we are here on this board in the first place is the media. there are so many self-esteem triggers in commercials, because the whole point of advertising is to convince you to buy something, and how do they do that? by telling you (or simply suggesting) that what you have right now isn't good enough. isn't that low self-esteem, in a nutshell? and since we're exposed to advertising pretty much 24/7, then we're always absorbing that message.

What commercial irks you most?

right now, it's the series of weight watchers ones. 1) why are they only featuring women? 2) why are they only featuring women who don't look like they need to lose any weight? i'm guessing that the message here is that "women should not/cannot be overweight." actually, now that i think about it, i don't think i've EVER seen an overweight woman in a TV commercial; have you?

The only time I have  seen overweight women in a commercial has been as a as before pictures touting some weight loss or physical fitness product. In the case of the 'Pine-Sol' commercial is as an "Aunty Mama" character (with more unspoken steroypes than you an shake a stick at-among them ' she has to be kinda lazy'  so she must know the easiest ( east labor intenstive) way to get things clean.)
