How do you compare yourself to others - looks, success, "stuff", something else?

I mainly only compare myself to other women and I typically start with looks: compare hair and hairstyles then weight. Next I move to whether or not she has kids and how they behave, check out how she's dressed then size up her mate.

we're just visually oriented. looks always come first; even though we're not supposed to judge books by their covers, we can't help it.

i don't do it, either. i figure that the person you're comparing yourself to is comparing herself to someone else, who's comparing themselves to someone else, etc. it's like an endless loop and the best thing you can do for yourself is break away from it.

Interesting question. I stopped making comparisons a few years ago since it just became rather depressing (I was going through a rough time.) In a way, when I feel most confident I don't compare that much, and when I am not feeling very secure I just avoid comparisons because it can make me feel more insecure.

Depending on where/how one puts oneself in the comparison, this activity can be rather sado-masochistic. I try very hard to be kind and supportive to myself, and avoid pain (especially self-inflicted pain) as much as possible ;-)

AS others have said, I try NOT to compare myself to others as that is a sure road to low self-esteem IMO: there is ALWAYS something about someone else that is "better" than you, KWIM? So I try to judge myself BY myself (that is, by my mental image of what I SHOULD be) and let it go at that --- at least if I fall flat there, it's my fault and theoretically I can do something to correct it.

I guess that I compare myself by looking at people's motivation and drive.

Heck when I look in the mirror I see Angelina Jolie staring back at me.
