Do you feel you know why you have low self esteem or have you always had it and there is no real reason?

when i was younger, my self-esteem was low because i would do what i thought i was "supposed" to do (what society dictates, etc.) instead of what i truly wanted to do. for example, i lost a lot of weight, even though i didn't need to, because i thought i was supposed to be super-skinny (that's what the media tells us), but my body isn't naturally like that. so i felt bad about myself because i was trying to conform to something that wasn't me.

I use to have low self esteem... I worked through it... but last year was betrayed by my husband and that poor self-esteem came roaring back.

That's interesting you would mention exercise. Do you feel it somewhat empowering to accomplish something difficult?

your husband's betrayal had nothing to do with you - he was thinking only about himself. but maybe you are doing the comparison thing as a way of looking for answers, like trying to understand why he did it? you are a wonderful person in your own right and other women have nothing on you. i'm sorry that he did what he did because it makes him look stupid and makes you feel bad.

i agree that exercise is the best medicine and even a little can work wonders.

are all of your responsibilities top-priority, or could you shuffle some of them around to make more time for yourself?

I have been told from a very young age, even up until now (29 years old), that it is extremely unattractive and downright conceited for anyone (especially women) to feel good about themselves, that only narcissists feel good about themselves. I have always been told that I'm ugly, stupid, that there's nothing good about me. I haven't found anyone who truly thinks otherwise. I thought I did at one point, until I heard them talking when they thought I wasn't around.

I know exactly why I have low self-esteem.

I wasn't really nurtured at all as a child.

how do you dress now? do you groom yourself (brush/cut/style/color your hair, wear makeup/perfume, etc.)?
