Checking IUD strings

Hi! It's my first time in this board, hopefully someone here will be able to help me. I got my IUD in and the doctor said I should check the strings every month. When I first tried I couldn't find them, I tried a few times, after that I just stopped trying.

Does everyone really check their strings every month?

Hi and welcome to the board!

I can't speak for everyone but I checked for my strings both time when I had the Mirena. Depending on how short your OB/Midwife cut them they may be difficult to locate. Sometimes they also will stick to the sides of the vaginal wall or coil up.

If you check again and still can't find them, I highly recommend calling in to your doctor and getting it checked out. I know of a couple of people whose IUDs expelled and sometimes without the user's knowledge. Sounds strange, I know, but has happened and is a small possibility.

Hi Chrissie, thank you for the reply. Are we really supposed to check for the strings every month? I'm going to try again, and hopefully they'll be there. Is there a better position to be in so that we can find them easily?

I would always check for mine in the shower with one leg propped up on the side of the tub. I don't know if there's one way that's easier than another.

According to the manufacturer's instructions, you should check for the strings once a month. I always did out of worry, lol!
