I have a friend who is 49 years old and in a new relationship. She is wondering if she needs to be concerned about birth control at her age or just disease prevention. We both think it is highly unlikely she will ever get pregnant but I think she needs to see the ob/gyn just to be safe. Thoughts?

Unless she is certain that she is menopausal then she could get pregnant. I knew a woman who got   pregnant at 48 (she had a few kids already). Your friend should see the gynecologist for a professional opinion. I would not want to take any chances at that age!

The question isn't really age, but how long it has been since she had a period.  Have you ever heard of a "menapause baby?"

I am not a doctor, but I think you would want to wait until you have not had a period for at least a year before assuming your are safe.  But I would definately ask a Gyn.
