More Than a Third of Births 'Unintended': CDC
Tue, 07-31-2012 - 12:09pm

The number of unintended births in the US has not changed since 1982 according to the CDC. "More than a third of births in the United States stem from unintended pregnancies, a number that's remained steady in the United States from 1982 to 2010, a new government report indicates." MORE

Is it lack of access to birth control, misuse, or something else?

I think some of this is due to a lack of common sense. If you don't want to have a child right now then you should be actively doing something to prevent an accident or mistiming, but I'm sure more than a few women figure "oh it wouldn't happen to me." Good grief.

Now of course some of this is due to a lack of education, which sadly will probably always be a factor. I don't think the problem is that the education isn't available to impoverished women and girls, but often they refuse to take advantage of it. There could be any number of reasons for that....disinterest, conflict with religious views, parents declining to allow their children this type of education, feeling that "home remedies" are sufficient, thinking it isn't a priority, etc.
