First visit to the GYN
Wed, 01-23-2013 - 12:23pm

I have never been to the GYN and have my first visit scheduled in two weeks. I am in a steady relationship and I want to get a more reliable form of birth control. I just want to know what I should expect. I've heard it can be really embarrassing. Thanks!

Hi there and welcome!

I'm not going to lie; it's embarrassing and takes some getting used to.  To lesson the embarrassment, make your appointment with a women.  Just try to remember that this is their job and your vagina is not the first they have seen!

A typical visit will include a breast exam, pap smear and internal exam.  You will have to fully undress.  Your doctor will feel your breasts for any lumps.  She will do a visual inspection of your vulva.  The pap smear consists of inserting a speculum into your vagina.  This opens your vagina up so the doctor can see your cervix and take the smear samples.  Please relax as much as you can during the opening of the speculum.  It can be uncomfortable.  You may also experience some light cramping when she takes the samples.  The whole thing takes only minutes though.  For the internal exam, your doctor will insert a finger and feel in your belly for your ovaries.

That's basically it.  Just be honest when talking to your doctor.  They have heard it all, really.  It's something you need to do, especially if you are sexually active.  It's so important to make sure you are staying healthy!

Let us know how it goes.  Take a deep breath.  It's not that bad and it's over pretty fast!
