Would you/Have you given the HPV vaccine to your daughter?
My daughter has received all of her other vaccinations, but I have opted not to have her given the HPV vaccine.
Both of my children do receive the required immunizations, but the HPV is one that will not be given.
I had no idea they offered to it boys!
A few years ago, at 25, I was perhaps one of the first Canadians to get Gardasil vaccine when it became available here. The fact that there is a vaccine that offers you protection against the most common cervical cancer strains of HPV is nothing short of miraculous, and the additional protection that Gardasil offers for genital warts is a true plus.
A close friend of mine has the genital warts strain of HPV and has had to go for repeat visits to the hospital for her gynecologist to either freeze or burn the wart growth from her cervix. Its a painful procedure and one that has almost destroyed her sex life. And she always practiced safe sex! HPV can be transmitted among sexually active partners because a condom is not sufficient protection against the disease.
By the way, my friend considers herself lucky to only be bothered by genitals warts, and not to have the cancerous strain of HPV.
I should also note, I had no side-effects except for a tender forearm after all three injections.
