According to Health Day News, two-thirds of U.S. youth (15-24) have engaged in oral sex with many believing it is "safe" per a new study out. "He said the findings are also valuable because too many people of all ages mistakenly believe that oral sex is "risk-free.""That's not the case," Hurt said. "Studies looking, for example, at patients visiting STD [sexually transmitted disease] clinics have shown that 5 to 10 percent have gonorrhea in the throat. And it's often asymptomatic and can be transmitted through oral sex."

Gonorrhea is becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics, and a report released last week by the CDC noted that certain strains are resistant to all but one such drug. Oral sex can also raise risks for infection with chlamydia, herpes and syphilis, the CDC noted" MORE

I find it interesting because while I hear of teens mentioning safe sex, nothing is ever mentioned about oral sex. Your thoughts?

The notion that oral sex is "safe" is all too common, and not only among young people. It will be a major uphill battle to change that perception, but it is something that needs to be tackled.

Carol I so agree! Oral sex is treated much the same as kissing was when I was a teenager! I would think that if it is such a big problem (and lets be honest, its probably not just teenagers who think that way) they should be publicizing the risks more for oral sex.

Based on what I've seen in some television interviews, teens don't even think of oral sex as sex! So naturally, they aren' tthinking of STDs...

I find the whole idea of  gonorrhea in the throat  horrifying!
