A woman keeping condoms on hand

I don't want to sound like a total tramp so please don't judge me. I have had a run in already with an STD and I am not going to go through this again. I'm just wondering how other women handle the condom situation with a new partner. Do you carry a couple in your purse or keep some on hand at home just in case things get to the point you might need them or what? How do you explain why you just happened to have condoms?

Hi Jambalyia, and welcome to the Sexual Health Board. Your question is one that makes me happy to read, so please don't think you'll be judged or called any names! You  are being proactive and taking charge of your health and sexuality by keeping condoms handy and presumably, making sure that your partners use them.

Honestly, I do not think you need to explain to ANYONE why you have condoms, either in your purse or at home. You would not have to explain or justify to a potential partner that you were using a different form of birth control, either. However, if the question should come up with a male partner as to WHY you have condoms on hand, turn it around and ask him why he is not prepared. Taking responsiblity of either birth control and / or prevention of an STD is not limited to any one person, of any gender whatsoever.

Good for you to be taking this on in this way, and any potential partner who wants to know why you are equipped, questioning it, is probably NOT worth your time.

Take care and all the best!

I agree with Nenuphar!
