We always go to my sister in law's brother and sister in law's. One thing I feel very fortunate about is that our family's blended really well. My mother used to cook for all of us, and she included the brother, and his wife and children as their family grew. Then when the cooking and confusion got too much for her, we shifted to their house where the kids have things to do. They're not big eaters so I am usually restrained to just one helping of things because the other ladies are thin and I don't want to be the fat girl having seconds and thirds. I try to have a good breakfast and some lunch because we will eat late. Some of what will be served is different than our family traditions, and my mom used to always make 'our' side dishes to have on the weekend. The hosts are generous about sharing leftovers - and since they don't have seconds, there are always lots of leftovers:) This year will be hard without my mother. One of our traditions, going back to when my oldest nephew was in kindergarten, is to pass a candle around the table and say what we are thankful for. The kids are often very funny and touching. I never make it through without crying, and the past few years I was so grateful to have my mother at the table. She was not easy to deal with but she was the center of my family and made the holidays special. Our Easter traditions are not so strong, and I did not feel her loss so much then, but I know I will miss her a lot. We also always went shopping on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The past few years, we went to Barnes and Noble and she sat and had coffee while I shopped for books (I buy all children on my list books and so I buy 40- 50 books). I would bring them back to her and she would make suggestions and approve or not. My sister in law always thought that I was good to do that with her, but I did it for me, to share that experience. I am not sure what I will do this year on the weekend. I work on Friday. My brother and I frequently went to the Celtics the night before or after Thanksgiving, and then I would go 'home' with him - my mom lived across the street. This year I will need to take the train as the NBA is letting me down. I expect to have to be very kind to myself that weekend. There is a suggestion that we get together and make one of my mother's specialties, Chex mix, and I want to be available if that is going to happen, so I am not making any post Thanksgiving plans yet. In another year, I might plan to do something totally different at Thanksgiving but this year I feel like my brother needs me to do what we've always done. There will be some comfort eating so hopefully there will also be some working out. Hope everyone has a great day as we all have things to be thankful for. SJ

This probably sounds a little odd to those of you who haven't been out here for the past few years...

SJ- you brought little tears to my eyes. You are such a sweet and thoughtful person. I can see that your mom was such a good influence on you (and your family's) life during this time of year. I'll be thinking of you next Thursday. I hope you have a pleasant time and be kind to yourself next weekend! :)

Liz- Doesn't sound odd to me! Since I moved 1,600 miles from my family, my mother and brother do the same thing. We don't have a big family left. My mom will take a couple of her relatives to dinner at the casino in Oklahoma on Thanksgiving! LOL! They aren't much for gamblers- my mom lurvs the nickle slots, and stops after she's spent $30. haha! The food is always amazing there.

We are driving down to SC to spend Thurs-Fri-Sat with DH's grandparents and other extended family. I found a recipe for Pumpkin Martinis. I plan to work on that most of the day! haha! Then I'm back at work for a quick shift on Sunday afternoon. Have a blessed week everyone!!

I hit the gym today!! I so didn't want to go, but just got ready and left. Sometimes if I don't "think" and just "do" I seem to get in those workouts. i can talk myself out of working out very easily. Once I'm there in the gym, I push myself really hard. I figure I'm there... I should just go for it! That's the last gym day and only gym day this week. I'm working tomorrow night and then off to SC. I hope my in laws decide to be kind to me this year. and if they don't I'll have my pumpkin martinis to hopefully get me through!!! LOL! I haven't had a "drink" in about.... well I can't even think how long it's been. Since July I think! After one drink I'll be sleepy. hahaha!

When I started this journey I had a rule that I had to go to the gym three days a week. I didn't have to work out after I got there, I just had too. And of course, once I was there, I always worked out. But I do lie to myself. I think 'I will only swim 60 laps' then I say 'you're already wet, swim 20 more'. Then I think, 'so close, you can do 100'. The sad thing is, I believe it when I lie to myself... I hope everyone's family treats them like the fine ladies we are...
