Lifting weights?

I keep hearing everywhere that you need to lift weights to get really toned up but I do not want to get big and muscular. I think it looks so ugly to see hard muscular women but I do like the look of some nicely shaped arms and legs. How would you tone up without getting big muscles?

I have been lifting weights off and on for a few years and I wish I could get some muscle! I think I don't stick with it long enough to ever develop anything that resembles big and bulky.

The only women I know who are even close to looking all muscley are the women at my local gym who compete. They actually train very hard, much differently than everyone else, to get their look.

It is an unfortunate, but extremely common misperception that lifting weights makes you bulky. When most people think women and weight lifting, they picture the type of women you'd see at fitness competitions--with gross tans and loads of steroids. Women CANNOT look like that naturally, and for those women that have a lot of muscle naturally, that takes A LONG TIME to get that way. So it's not like you're going to lift weights for three months and all of a sudden look like the incredible hulk. Weight lifting is the fountain of youth, so don't be afraid of it!
