Hi Everyone. I am brand new to iVillage and just found this group. This is exactly what I need. I am unemployed and looking for a new job and one of the things the job coach told me was to lose some weight and tone up. Being over 40 and overweight doesn't make a good first impression when interviewing for a new job.

I can't wait to get to know everyone and get some tips on creating and sticking to an exercise routine.

Hi Ill and welcome to the board. I have a brother who just went through the unemployment/looking for work process and his job coach told him to lose weight and to quit smoking. Both those issues were major strikes against him when it comes to job interviews. He has shaped up a bit but hasn't quit smoking, though he did stop going to interviews smelling like an ashtray. He landed a part time job but it has potential to turn into something more.

Good luck with the job search! Have you started your workouts yet? What kind of things are you doing?

I have been told the same thing. Employers are not supposed to discriminate for weight. But they do it...and how would you prove it anyway? I am new here too. I am 46 and looking for a full-time job. I know losing weight would help because it makes you look younger AND because overweight people are seen as slow and lazy. Unfair, but it's true. As if skinny people can't be lazy. ;-) Good luck! Let us know how you're doing. Heidi in Colorado.
