How to begin regular exercise routine

Hi Everyone,

I am again going to attempt to turn over a new leaf and start exercising regularly but I don't know where to begin with a plan that I can actually stick to. How do you do it?

Hi Brenda. Sorry we haven't responded sooner. lots of posting problems. For myself  in order to  stick to a workout program I have to 1) do something I really enjoy and 2) start with just 2-3 days a week. If i  don't enjoy the exercise I won't stick with it. And if I  try to jump into 6-7 days a week I burn out.

I read an article yesterday  that said you  should always keep exercise seperate from weight loss because it would make it seem too much like work. Something to think about.

Good points Miss P. I'm just getting back into exercising after a while off and I will shoot for 2 -3 times a week and start out slow. . . 20 - 30 minutes a day and build on that.

I am trying to get my BIL to start getting some exercise and he is really rebelling.  He used to live on the third floor and got a lot of activity daily because he did the stairs several times a day.  Now he moved to a first floor and is getting no exercise at all.  He even drives to the mailbox when it is within walking distance.  I told him to start by walking over to the next building, twice a day.  When that feels comfortable, do it twice...twice a day.  Then keep increasing it gradually as it becomes more comfortable.  There are so many times that I just don't feel like exercising so I tell myself I will do it for 5 minutes.  Once I get going I start to feel good and I usually get in at least 30 minutes. 

As someone else said, the best exercise to do is one that you will continue to do on a regular basis. Whatever it is, just move!
