Biggest Loser Discouraging People From Exercise?

Do you watch The Biggest Loser? Do you ever get discouraged over the amount of exercise the participants are doing to lose weight? According to Health Day News, a new study out suggests many people are not happy with what they are seeing. ""The depictions of exercise on shows like The Biggest Loserare really negative," study lead author Tanya Berry, a physical-activity promotion expert at the University of Alberta, in Canada, said in a university news release."People are screaming and crying and throwing up, and if you're not a regular exerciser you might think this is what exercise is -- that it's this horrible experience where you have to push yourself to the extremes and the limits, which is completely wrong," she said." more

Seeing the contestants exercise on Biggest Loser encourages me to exercise, too, even though I know I am not going to spend the same amount of time or go at the same intensity.  And I think most people know that exercise is good for them and doesn't have to be done to that extreme.  However, many of those people are looking for an excuse not to exercise and there they have it!  And I feel the same way about fast food.  Most people know that it's not healthy to eat fast food on a regular basis, but they choose to do it, and therefore, pay the consequences.  Children might not know this, but they are taken to these restaurants by their parent, who do know better.

I have to say I do over exercise but not like the show does.. I for one think things should be a balance in eating and exercising in order to lose weight and feel good about one self... I know I wouldn't like being sick over it... The show does go over board on the work outs.. that is a fact.. That is my 2 cents..

There's a bunch of things wrong with that show.

Not only are the contestants exercising to the extreme in terms of intensity, but also for well over recommended amounts of time too.  I get nervous seeing seeing people in the gym for more than 2 hours, never mind the 8 hours the contestants put in.

I know what you mean about the show going to extreme, but I take into consideration that it's a TV show.  I guess my point is that no one watching that show is going to think that it's necessary to exercise that much.  I still enjoy watching the show and look forward to it each season.  It's just entertainment to me, just like any other show.

The thing I always wonder when watching the show is how all those people are not getting injured with the way they work out. It is amazing there aren't more injuries imo.

Well, they do get injured more than what's shown on air, but they have a medic team always standing by in the gym.They also have a recovery room with massages, hot tub, ice etc for post work out recovery. These things take care of the injuries.

The contestants need to lose all that weight (and it's huge we all know!!) in like 6-7 months. That's why they have to work that hard and that long. In real lif we don't have such deadlines, do we? We can take it a lot easier, just spend an hour or so exercising and successfully lose weight.  The show has inspired me a lot. It made me believe in myself and made me think " yes, I can do it too". But, I have to admit that I don't agree with everything they say and yes,pushing that much can be really bad.

I agree with PP who said that people will just use it as an excuse not to exercise. I think rational adults know that is extreme circumstances, hence the name. It does help to know that as painful and hard as it was for them to get through, they did it even when they didn't think they could. It gives me hope!

I think it can be discouraging to see how much weight they lose each week, but the rational part of me knows it is because they do nothing but workout all day.  I know I don't have that ability so I know not to expect the same results.  I've also wondered about injuries!  In the first few seasons they would say how sore they were, injured, etc.  As the seasons progress, they leave that off the show for the most part.

Another point is they have to pass a medical exam beforehand to show that they are medically able to participate in the show and limitations are set for those who need them.   You know the old statement "Be sure to check with your doctor before starting any exercise program."  Who does that?  We just join a gym and jump on the ole treadmill.

lol I only know of one person ever who checked with a doctor first and that was my 76 year old mother. (Her doc was actually excited about it!)
