Discussing weight loss surgery with obese friend

I have a friend who is obese and has tried everything under the sun to lose weight but she just can't seem to ever take much off. Would it be rude for me to bring up the possibility of weight loss surgery? I keep thinking about Gov Christie and his struggle, maybe I could use him as an example?

I didn't realize my comments didn't post the other day--just a blank reply.

I know for me I would not want someone else trying to "fix" me--I was morbidly obese my entire life and knew it and tried countless ways and times to loose the weight--so for me someone else pointing out I need to loose weight just made me feel like even more of a failure.  Also, to be successful at wls you have to be self motivated to change everything--the way you eat, your exercise, your thoughts about food--the wls just gives you a jump start but if you don't make the changes to your life you won't loose all the weight and keep off the weight you do loose.

I personally would rather have a friend openly discuss my weight loss struggle with me rather than have me feel like the elephant in the room anytime I am around her.

I don't think any obese person out there doesn't realize they need to loose weight on their own and hasn't attempted many diets/pills/work out plans etc.  In my opinion you bringing up weight loss surgery as a suggestion to her would just be an insult of you pointing out how obese you think she is.  The reality for any morbidly obese person is they need to independently decide they are ready to make drastic changes and then do it.  If you don't have the self motivation to get your eating, exercise and mental battle with food in check there is no point in doing anything.  I know many people who didn't loose much even after surgery or regained a lot because they weren't ready for the battle.
