We have a front loading washer and boy does it get a funky smell.  Anyone else have this happen?  It just smells funny when it is empty and I'm not sure why.  Should I clean it out with something?  Help!

Soap scum and dirt cling to the drum, because it is NOT an agitator.  Make SURE you ALWAYS use HE laundry detergent.  It is specially designed to clean clothes with less residue.  Using less regular detergent will foul your washer twice as fast, and will NOT clean your clothes.

As for cleaning a fouled washer, there are products on the market for that.  Use according to package directions, about once a month.  Running the washer empty, with just HE bleach will help, but not be a complete fix.  Always leave the washer door OPEN after use.  Drying out puddles inside will help reduce the odor.

Thanks for the tips! I always use HE detergent, so now worries there. I think I'll try running the washer empty with HE bleach and then leave it open after. I always close it so that's probably the main issue there.

I  take an old towel or rag and wipe out the inside of the rubber gasket because that's where the water stays .If I can get out 90% of the water out it helps. Then I always leave the washer door open.  I have a Maytag which has a clean washer cycle. I just follow the manual and use 2/3 cup of bleach and it cleans it plus takes out any smell.
