What are some of the environmentally UNfriendly things you used to see or do way back when you were a kid?

I remember seeing people roll down their car window and throw trash out. I can't fathom seeing someone do that these days. (But judging by all the trash I see on the side of the road, I think some people still do!)

I STILL see people do that! Especially in Las Vegas. :P Yuck. I still see people throwing their (still burning) cigarette butts out, and while it makes me cringe, I admit I used to do the same thing in my early 20s. (blush) One time, I even had some guy pull up next to me, roll down his window, and scream some obscenities to me for doing it. Back then, I was outraged he yelled at me, but now, I SO get it. :)

How about using styrofoam containers for everything?

My MIL uses styrofoam cups at home instead of a regular glass. Drives me nuts!

My parents used to eat on paper/plastic plates almost every night. I remember taking out the garbage almost every day - this HUGE bag of trash. Dh and I compost and recycle. It's amazing how little trash we generate. We have a trash compactor in the kitchen and we change the bag about once every two weeks.

Wow - once every two weeks is great! I can definitely see the draw to disposables. After all, they were designed to make life easier. The harm just outweighs the benefits.

I wonder, did we not see the potential downside long ago when we were coming up with ideas like disposable plates and cups?
