I am going to be buying new tables for my {our} family room I {we} want a console table and maybe a new lamp table or 2. There is not enough room  for a coffee table.Generally ,I have  traditional to a little more up to date but not modern or contemporary style. When  we bought our bedroom furniture we bought a matched set something I now wish I had not done so now it is time to get this new for the den do I do the matchy matchy thing or learn from my history?

Definitely learn from your experience.

Matchy matchy is all well and good but there are other ways to make an eclectic set of tables and consoles fit in a traditional room --- go with similar color woods for example... We have a living room with a built-in entertainment center in a relatively traditional style in a light oak, with tarnished brass and white glass knobs on cabinet doors. Clearly, we can't do much about this HUGE piece of wood along one wall --- except maybe paint it! And we already had furniture which is perfectly serviceable and weren't really in a position to replace it. So... we went the eclectic route! Behind our floating sectional sofa, we have two Amish oak traditional style cabinets with glass doors and tarnished barss handles instread of sofa tables; we have one end table in Craftsman style, and we have a more-or-less modern coffee table; all of these are in a light honey oak finish. In additon, there is a large northern-style Chinese armoire on the wall opposite the entertainment center in elm... They all work together despite the different styles because they are all basically the same color!
