Given how focused the world has gotten on recycling and reusing has anyone decided to not go with a traditional fresh tree?

They are indeed interesting.

We decided to forgo "fresh" trees in 2008 when the price was so high and we were still reeling form the market crash of '08. So we recycled an outdoor tree! It is a white fiberoptic tree with a slightly blue tinge to it when lit (but you can really only see the light when the house is dark so that isn't much of an issue.). So for the past three years, that has been our tree of choice...

In 2008, it was all blue and white:

I think using the outdoor tree indoors was a great idea! It looked so nice with the bright colored ornaments on it. I do get missing the smell of the fresh trees though. Candle and potpourri companies have gotten much better at capturing the authentic scent though.
