Need some ideas!

Hi everyone, this board may be my new home! We are in the process of buying a house, a forclosed fixer-upper. It has been DH's and my dream to buy a house and work together to make it our own, and we have been blessed with an amazing opportunity!

The outside of the house is fine, the siding and windows have recently been improved, but the inside needs work. It will need all new floors throughout, as well as new paint and appliances. With every single room being a blank canvas, I'm suddenly overwhelmed with options!

One room that needs a lot of change is the living room. Love the fireplace, hate the paneled walls...especially since they don't go all the way up to the ceiling, I think it would make the room look taller if it didn't have that line there.

Anyway, I'm posting a picture, and if you can offer any suggestions on flooring/wall color/decor, that would be great!

Hey Jasmine!! How exciting that you guys are doing a remodel! It will be so much fun to take this place and turn it into something you love. DH and I are (slowly) remodeling our 4th house together right now.

I agree that you should take out that paneling and drywall that whole area... what colors are you thinking of for the walls? It's hard to tell from this photo but is this a smaller space? You may want to think about redoing the ceiling/painting it to help with making the room feel bigger and possibly remove/replace the fan (I'd personally remove it unless it's really needed to help air circulation. Are you thinking of hardwood or carpeting for the floor? The fireplace could probably stay as it is, just replace the front cover and maybe update the mantel? Do you have any photos of rooms you're using for inspiration? What a fun project!

I agree, that panlling HAS to go. Wonder what they were thinking, not taking it to the ceiling!

Wood floors are always a good idea. If you neeed to, you can always "soften" them with area rugs, which would be a good look with the fireplace, I think.

If you decide to paint the fireplace, be sure to give the brick a good claning first, and be sure to use the right kind of paint. http://www.ehow.com/painting-brick-fireplace/ But I'd wait until you have the walls ans ceiling pinted and the floors in before deciding if painting is where you want to go.
