Hello,

What does everyone do for back to school? Do you save for it like Christmas? Do you purchase special clothes. What do you do for this time of year.

Fortunately it my ex husband's year to pay for supplies.  My ODS is graduating this year so I know there will be other expenses through out the year. But at least for my turn next year there is only my YDS for this expense. I also try to buy them things for Christmas they need like underwear and socks. Boring mom I know! I also put toothpaste and shower gel in their stockings.

Happy Back to school everyone

I don't have someone to send 'back to school' but I read an article with a few tips. The first was to make some time to go through the house and gather up office supplies and use what you have to fill up the list first. I would think expanding to grandparents or even friends for a swap might fill in some gaps. Everything doesn't have to be new. As for clothes, the article suggested trying to get by with what was worn in the summer until the weather gets cooler...clothing prices will drop in September, plus you will know what is 'cool'. My mother always gave us underwear and socks for Christmas...she liked us to have a lot of packages to open so the necessities filled in with a few things we asked for.

I pulled out the bag of school supplies left over from ODD and went through them and then starting picking up stuff a little at a time while at the grocery store and my mom sent home a few things with them from vacation. We do usually wait til October to do new clothes shopping, its still way too hot here in Texas to need anything other than what they are wearing for the summer, except I will pick them up each a light weight sweater to wear over their tank tops and cami's in the classrooms at school and DH did take them out for new sneakers last weekend. We do also need new leotards for dance classes that start up this weekend. My mom also sent home a bunch of new clothes for them from their vacation which will easily get them through til the cold months. I do wrap up new socks, hair ties, etc. as christmas gifts also.

We don't do a huge "back to school" shopping trip, either.  One, finances, and two, it still warm and you know after they see what the other kids are wearing, they will want more stuff.

She pretty much has two wardrobes, except maybe shoes and coats, so neither of us have to spend too much at one time.  Any favorite pieces of clothing she will carry back and forth, but for the most part she has enough at each house.

Last year was kindergarden so we had to buy a lot of stuff like backpack, headphones for lab, etc. School is on strike here so I haven't even thought about it. I definitely buypants one new outfit but he has tons of second hand clothes from my nephew. Ironically it doesn't last for DS2. That works tho bc nephew and DS1 like athletic clothes ans DS2 prefers dressier (? For lack f a better word) clothes.

I have lots of office supplies....my last job closed the office and loaded us.

Stormy, did you say "headphones for lab" for a kindergartener?

We have that too Serenity. They go to computer lab I believe once a week and are able to take headphones to concentrate on whatever they are working on, so they aren't distracted on everything else around them. I haven't gotten either of mine headphones, they are zoned in enough in computer lab.

This year is freshman year college so of course we had to buy a lot of stuff for the first time. And most books I was able to get away with buying used but not all of them. Dd is doing work-study so most everyday expenses will be hers although she is saving up for a car.
