Its the most wonderful time...of the year! (Staples commercial and one of my favorites)
What are people spending these days on school supplies? I realise it depends on what grade your child is in so maybe include that.
It is not my turn to buy supplies this year(it is my exhusband's turn) so I won't have that expense. But I did buy some clothing and shoes for the boys. That was about $150. I know I may have to buy my oldest more shoes half way though but I just hate spending huge money on shoes for them. They wreck them if they are cheap or not. They are so hard on shoes!
Anyway just curious as to what people are doing?

She picked everything out herself while I looked at cards, and then we went through the cart and the list and she put a thing to two back. She is reusing a few things from last year.
Then at check out (self checkout) I told her I only had so much money right now, so we started with what she had to have, and ended up leaving several things once the dollar amount got up to a certain amount.
She watched me put cash in and said "oh, that was close, you only got $1.19 back in change."
Good lesson all the way around.
Oh, I think we spent about $25 or so.
Yup, same show. I rmember the hair bows. LOL
Very true about living in the moment. I would not want to live thinking I only had to save for tomorrow. One has to enjoy today BUT not at the expense of tomorrow and vice versa. There has to be a balance. And since when did living in the moment mean getting into debt? LOL

The mom claimed that we had to live in the moment because all we have is today. Well, that may be true, but Dr. Phil had to point out that her family may actually live past tomorrow.
Living for today and being in the moment doesn't mean your daughter needs 100 hair bows.
I think I remember that show! LOL
I was watching an old Oprah with Dr. Phil with some guests that were in a lot of debt. A DW and mother claimed "my kids are smart, they will get scholarships, so I they don't need a college fund."
Both kids were under 5 years old.
Needless to say, bigger issues were at hand here.
I spent $200 or so getting DD20 toiletries, paper goods, school and cleaning supplies for her apartment - but she had a list, with coupons.
DS needs socks, underwear and such, so I will get those for him.
School, room and board for each totals about $19,000 for each of them, and we do pay about $14,000 or so. They buy their own books, and are responsible for any other spending and both have jobs.
We also take care of cell phones and car insurance (they both have cars at school.) But they pay for gas and upkeep.
So back to school has a big ring to it, and it just gets bigger each year - just think, Fall abroad for one next year, then law school! JOY.

Being homeschoolers are shopping for school looks different for us. There are no school clothes to buy - we mainly work in our pj's
I always wait to buy supplies like paper, pencils etc when they are marked down super low. Right now, we are not in need of any supplies.
This year, so far the expenses are low. I shop throughout the year keeping my eye out for used curriculum to purchase from fellow homeschoolers that we can use now or the following school year. In Alberta, where I live, we get gov't funding and I have been good at sticking to the budget and not over spending (any over spending comes out my pocket). I can pay for library memberships, sports, music lessons, zoo or science memberships etc as well as books and regular school supplies. Heck, we can even buy a computer if we wanted to with the money.
So far, I have no major expenses planned this year. If by spring we have not spent most of the money we are going to get an ipad for the boys.

For DS (7th grade) I spent $35 total on 5 pairs of khakis, $20 on a new packpack, and $20 on other school supplies. His other clothes and such still fit and he came home with most of his supplies from last year. He honestly doesn't care about new anything so there isn't much pint in dragging him to the store.
The thing is, they HATE reusing something from the year before.
DD12 is kind of, sort of, understanding the concept of how much expenses all hit at the same time. Supplies, clothes, fees and registration for sports, classes, etc.
Finally got her somewhat convinced that getting a little bit before school starts gives her a chance to see what other kids are wearing, using, doing, etc. and then we can do a second small shopping trip a little later.
I overheard a mom and DD in the store the other day. Kid "I need a new back pack." Mom "Is there anything structurally wrong with your back back?" Kid, with mopey face, "No, I guess not."
Amen! I am not the only one.
Oh, and Karen, boys are horrible on shoes. I used to give my DS a budget and anything more than that he had to cover himself. Even back then I think I still allowed $40 or so, but the ones he wanted were always at least $60, if not more. And that was nearly 10 years ago!
No back to school here, but "endless rounds of coffee" sounds extra good especially when fall arrives!! I always shop for myself in Fall & Spring for clothes...just love them & get so tired of the same ones to wear to work! I do love bargains though...
