I was trying to put up holiday decorations this weekend and I just got so grumpy and down. The house we live in now is 1600 sq ft and I bought most of my decorations for my old 2600 square foot house. I have about 3 boxes of decorations I am either going to throw out or give to charity. I also have 3-4 big storage boxes that have nowhere to go and they used to look so nice in my past homes. Every room in this house needs work, from mildew shower, to beaten faded carpet in all bedrooms, to a basement that is a mess and a garage that is messy. I try to do a room a year, but I just can't seem to keep up, it is not an open format and it is on a dirt road, which makes keeping things clean so hard. And redoing rooms is so expensive, I just do the minimum. Yes, we are healthy, kids are getting an education, but we just did our healthcare selections and the same levels of this year will run us $130 a month more. Our taxes will also go up with this fiscal cliff issue on the table. My gosh, DH makes six figures but only brings home less than $2400 a pay now! Taxes, healthcare premiums and not having a pension has us drowning. DH got a raise of 5% last year, but it all went to healthcare and increased auto insurance. I am working really hard, over 50 hours a week, and this month is so tight. We cut way back for the holidays, but college tuition is due for both kids- $14k. I have most of it saved, but it is going up each year and we need to make some up. Sorry, just venting here. Want to go out and have a festive time, but scared to spend anything. We have done well at paying down a lot of debt and I don't want to go backward. Wine at home is about it for me, cheap wine! -M

Dee-

Simple is good, and honeslty I like lights and holiday songs.  But DH has the TV in the evening so we watch the military channel, no music.  We have a lot of lights in the attic, he does not want to put them out, so our street and area is really dark and gloomy.

Downtown looks so pretty and twinkly, I love it, then I come home to dark and dank.

Our kids will come home from college, we have not seen one brother in almost a decade or his family and he lives in town.

DH and I do go up north and cut a tree from the family land (no cost) and the kids will help put it up.  It will be more fun when they get home.

I love christmas. I really and truly do. I enjoy the upbeat christmas music. You don't hear about violence, lost love or down on your luck stories in the words of christmas music. Even blue christmas SOUNDS upbeat to me. I love all the lights that brighten up the dark nights. The children smiling and laughing happily about all the excitement and glitter. I love seeing my whole family together - which is rare - my sister's family hasn't been back for xmas in 10 years! Even her children are coming from college. Hopefully we will sing some carols. Tho I doubt it bc all of our spouses think it is corny even though we used to do it.

We were very poor and didn't have much money for presents. Somehow we always found a way to enjoy ourselves.

We buy presents second hand - DH got a tub of hockey guys for $8 and our son will be over the moon on christmas. He loves that stuff. No need to extend ourselves to have happy kids :)

I hope you find a way to enjoy yourself. Otherwise what is the point? Just work and pay off things without living and enjoying life too. I hope you find peace and blessings.

Hugs,

Dee

Sorry, didn't mean to be so down. We have a paved drive, but half of it is caving in on the side, DH does not think it is an issue at all, but $4k to fix it, does not allow it in a priority. I used to have two trees, one in the balcony just in burgundy and gold, it was really pretty. No balcony here.

Yes, Marie, living tight sucks for lack of a better word especially at Christmas time.  We trimmed back four years ago and Christmas has been a little boring every since.  I have tons of ornaments packed away down stairs that go on a larger tree, but for the past three years we have had a tiny tree.  I'll save them a little longer in hopes of having a better outlook on Christmas down the road.

We are very fortunate.  We live on paved roads and our long driveway is blacktopped also.

Hang in there, those tow kiddos will be through schoold before long and maybe you can afford more detailed renovations then.

Dirt road over too. Can be so dusty in the summer!

I hear ya Marie. I am having one of those, just use what you have and enjoy by gosh and golly years. Things will be better when I go back to work and for you when the kids are done school, or at least one of them. You have a double whammy there.

The more you put up for decorations...the more you have to take down. Run a simple house hold and you can still be festive! Give those decorations to charity, you will feel good. Delcutter and relax.
