I've talked to my SIL for many years about money, budgeting, finances. It always went in 1 ear and out the other. Well she finally took notice when she realized we (hubby and I) are sitting better financially than we ever have been...using the envelope system for 2 years now.
I gave her Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover book. She's finally seeing the big picture! SIL and her hubby are in the mid 40s and have never had a budget. They barely have a retirement fund and even less of an emergency fund. If they do get money saved up their use it for who knows what.
I'm happy to report SIL has finally written out a plan/budget! She has goals and timelines. I think she's realizing changes need to be made :) I don't follow Dave Ramsey to the T. I like a lot of his ideas, but some ideas are insane and a bit extreme to me. It sounds like SIL is going to follow him according to the babysteps.
So happy she finally had her "I get it now" moment! It's never to late!
Good for your SIL! The mid-40s is not too late to change your financial life. I didn't start on my debt journey until I was 42. Eight years later I have paid off over $100K in debt, bought & paid for two new cars, paid for a total of 8 years of college for my two older kids, made massive home improvements, taken my family on five amazing vacations, and saved substantially for my retirement. And I didn't do Dave Ramsey's or anyone else's program, either, though I'm all for anything that helps people get control of their lives.
It *can* be done.

I love this. Helping others see the light confirms what you are doing and gives you a warm fuzzy! It gives you motivation to keep going with your goals and plans as well, or it does for me! Awesome!
I think this is GREAT! Good for you for helping.
I've been helping my grown dd's friend with her budget for about a month now (reviewing it with her weekly). It can be a lesson in frustration (oye!), but I remain detached and nonjudgemental. All I can do is help her work through the math and set some goals. She has to be the one to stick to the plans.
