So you all know I took the buyout last week and things are moving pretty well so far:

  • - Researched financial firms and selected a couple to pursue
  • - Did local reasearch on one firm in particular, had 3 phone calls, one face to face, and filled out the application - they have an opening in my area and I have a headquarters telephone interview appointment for later this week, so that is moving along nicely.
  • -Met with the transition counseling firm my previous employer set us up with.

Thanks for the positive feedback.

Yes and no on certification, you do need to be licensed, and have a background check so you can register with the Federal Trade Commission. The background check includes a criminal and credit check. A firm must sponsor you in order for you to take the licensing exams, so they usually do pay you for the time you spend studying for the exam, not much, but they usually want you studying full time, not working at another job while you try to fit it in as the exams are quite daunting. In 1992 I took all these exams except one, and got the highest scores in the state of Ohio at the time, so I am not really worried about passing, IF I do the required prep work, of course.
No, you do not need to be certified, in fact, you must practice for two years before you can get certified (it is called a CFP or Certified Financial Planner) but you can get through certification faster, and don't have to take as many pre-certification classes, with an MBA - I have one in Marketing and Finance.
My goal would be to go for certification after licensing, as you are required to take continuing education anyway and why not have it all apply to a certification. I enjoy learning, and especially if I could serve people better, I would want to always continue to learn and achieve the highest levels of certification.

I am getting really psyched for the cruise too! DD and I have some HOT outfits! I really want to dance my toes off!
