The difference is that people who prepare do not have emergencies turn into catastrophes.

Norma, I agree with Ashely -- the coming years look very bright for you!! Only 106 more weeks and you'll be rolling in money, e-funds and sinking funds!!

Norma, I totally understand that you cannot build up a lot in savings because of where you are currently but you are obviously making great progress and I don't doubt that you will be doing FANTASTICALLY in 2014. (And I may not be that old, but I remember when 100$ was a lot of money too!

I think you really have the knowledge and wherewithal to finish your debt payoff and transition to building up savings and wealth in the next couple of years. You have developed the discipline and that is hard! You have obviously learned a lot about finances (this board is a good place to get information and feedback) and you are putting it into practice. I think most of all in our money situation, is the amount and size of savings we are able to maintain.

I used to be in the same boat as Kelly.

I now have a healthy e-fund, plus massive sinking funds to absorb emergencies. It's made a big difference in my life.

For me, it's not about my ability to absorb the emergency. Like PP have noted, emergencies come in flurries, snowflakes turn into snowballs and the next thing you know, you're snowed in again. So when Murphy visits me, I worry that, while I can absorb these current crisis, another one may be down the road and the e-fund won't be able to absorb it.
