So I work in a large organization with a defined pension plan. I am up for a promotion there but it has been taking forever and there are no guarantees. My husband is very unsupportive of the promotion as it is a 45 min drive. I presently ride the bus 80 mins a day each way so I'm not sure why??
A position came up less than 10 minutes away from home running a small charity. It is a local community centre that runs programs for seniors and kids. It is more money but no benefits and no security. My husband LOVES the idea. I suspect he thinks I'll be home more. But I'll have board meetings, evening events, etc. The board loves me but they are puzzled why I would be interested in giving up my security and pension to take over their small operation.
Am I crazy to consider this? My work is "okay" and pays decent. If I got the promotion, I would love to just stay :) It is a security blanket - I know I can do it and I know we can survive comfortably on the money. But it is not as flexible and creative as one might hope for. Running your own organization has an appeal. I'm not sure how much *I* want this as opposed to what my husband wants.
What do you think?
