Hope I did the right thing in a fender bender

I brushed up against a car when pulling into a parking spot. There was some damage on the stationary car, but it's not clear to me that the damage wasn't there before. I left a note anyway.

It would have been simpler just to leave, but I felt compelled. I hope I did the right thing. I'm guessing that I'll likely be out a few to several hundred dollars. (It's an old car, so I'm hoping the repairs, if I'm responsible, won't be too expensive.) I'm a little unsettled, and I'm waiting for the other party to call. I feel kind of vulnerable -- what if the other person is not honest?

What do you think?

You did the right thing.

An adjuster should be able to tell if the damage was from your car, or if the damage was already there.

If you had drove off, unsure if you even damaged the car or not, it would have really bugged you.

I think the Powers that be will make sure it all works out.  They may not even call you!

Was there any scrape marks on you car?

My car was not scratched or damaged in anyway. There is a small black mark, but it will wipe off. Likewise, on the other car, there was just a black line on the bumper, which is why I don't understand how a whole piece of the car just fell off. I suspect that it was already compromised or damaged before I got there.

If I were in a big city, I'd be more reluctant to take responsibility. You just might run into a crazy guy or a nutty person. I feel my town is more manageable.

Anyway, the person hasn't called.

They called me, left a voicemail. I called back, left a voicemail. It's been almost five days. I'm wondering what's going on with them. If I were in their situation, I'd try to get it resolved ASAP.

I finally got in touch with the car owner. It took a while because apparently this wasn't a high priority for her. I think I got lucky, because she seems quite honest. She offered to let me examine her records and talk to her repair shop. Since this is a small town, I also know the repair shop. She said I could just pay whatever I could afford. Since the repair wasn't huge, I offered to take care of the bill (a bit less than $300).

Of course, that means I'll be set back in my repayment.

Someone got me a couple days ago in the parking and lot and they were not as kind as you to leave a note.  We will still have a $300 deductible to get it fixed.  Doesn't seem right.

I'm sorry, Serenity. No, it's not right, is it.
