I got promoted but . . .

the other manager was let go :( I am having a hard time with it because even though I had suspicions, I really didn't see this coming. I know that my promotion has nothing to do with her being let go, but it's still hard. I was working with her on a project this morning and then at 12 I get a call from the director (she had travelled to our Montreal office where other manager was and was calling me from there) to say that

10% raise is awesome!

Sorry about the co-worker, but you had nothing to do with it.

I remember trying out for cheerleading and I made it and my best friend did not. I balled and balled. But it not keep me from cheering!

Bex, The working world is an inherently unfair and unfeeling process. Your work has been recognized, and that is awesome. Make sure you actually use those extra vacation days. With out knowing the circumstances of your co worker, I can't say whether this is fair or not, but I will say this. Never believe that your work counts for more than the paycheck you just earned. make sure you set priorities for your life outside of work goals. Always be prepared for the axe to fall, no matter whether you are the best or worst worker. You have to take care of and look out for you...don't depend on anyone else. There are people who will help you and people you will help along the way, but the person who cares most about you has to be you. Savor this moment...enjoy your achievement! SJ

Congratulations Bex!!

I agree, your colleague was let go for reasons that had nothing to do with you. I can understand you're feeling badly about it, but there's really nothing to do but move forward.

Yippee!! Raises and more vacation!! You ROCK Bex!

You deserve this. That is the only way to think about this promotion. Go have fun at the pub!

It's only natural to sympathize with the person who lost his/her job. It's only human, and you know what it's like to struggle. But you are not responsible, and there isn't anything you can do to change the situation. These are our human limitations.

Well, I have to say, I don't feel guilty at ALL anymore. In fact I'm right PO'ed. I went into work on Friday morning and sat down with my director because I wanted to know what projects the other manager had so I knew what I had to take on until our new hire starts. Turns out she had ONE other project. ONE. That's it!!!! I was (and AM) managing NINE!!!! And she had one (very, very little one) aside from the big one that I had to take on!!!

It is too bad that the promotion now seems bittersweet. I don't know how close you were to the other manager, but I think if you wanted to help her in any way - (review her resume, find some leads, etc.), or just lend a shoulder it would be appreciated. When I was laid off from my job 6 years (almost 7 now) only one person from there actually offered any help. Everybody else acted as if I had the plague and I only heard from one other person who was asking me about where I currently worked! Which I thought was chutzpah since she didn't email me or anything after I left to ask how I was doing. I realize it's human nature to avoid the person who had that happen to but I was there over 5 years.
