I think I'm going to plan a vegetable garden

I've decided to try my hand at gardening this year and see how it goes.

I was looking at my (destroyed) back yard and trying to figure out the cost to fix it up. I think rather than try and reseed the whole yard (dogs killed the grass over the winter) I am going to create some raised bed vegetable gardens. There is a perfect spot that gets a lot of sun so I am going to try my hand at it. The only real cost would be soil, some cedar posts and seeds. So for less than $50 I could turn the garden around!

If it works out, awesome, if not, I'll just plant some shrubs next year :)

Bex, assorted greens are super easy to grow plus they are good for you and do great in cold weather.

Watch the mint, it can take over an entire garden if allowed! I always do basil in pots so I can take it in if we get late or early frosts as it is so darn sensitive, but I love it!

Yes, I would totally use your front garden if you can! At home our house faces west, so the front is a great area for sun. DH took the front bed in front of the walk and planted strawberries there. They make a fantastic ground cover, have little flowers in early May and tons of strawberries most of the summer (except the super hot months.) These are ever bearing strawberries so that is why we get them all summer. And nothing is like really sweet strawberries in a bowl just minutes after picking them!

Hi Bex, Good luck with the garden. I've had success with raised beds. They do well here in our rocky soil, but also seem to be growing in popularity everywhere.

We have a great gardening board here if you're interested~

Have you ever grown cilantro? I LOVE it (I cook a LOT of Mexican foods). I am trying it this year, but I have no idea how it will turn out. Does it take over too?
