Hi all,

I just wanted to come here for a little bit of accountability. I have been spending like crazy since I paid off the debt and I need to get it under control! The holidays were nuts and since then I've been in this blah mood and just let things slide. Good news is that I am still debt free but I have some big expenses coming up!

The good:

- Still no debt

- Paying an extra $200 bi weekly on the mortgage

-Budgeted for an extra $400 a month to build up the efund (the plan is to put $400 a month into the efund and then every February dump it all into an RRSP . I will get close to $3k back which I will put right back in the efund and keep doing this until I max out my RRSPs.

- I have set up my company pension / savings plan. I am contributing 5% and with the company match I am getting 13%

- Trip to Vegas in April is paid including spending money :)

-  I love the new job! The hours are better, the salary is better and the work is much more interesting!!!

The Bad:

- Very low sinking funds/ efund (like stupidly low)

- Mindless spending. I couldn't even tell you where the last few hundred dollars is gone. I suspect to eating out !!!

- Up coming vet bill. My dog chipped his tooth. Depending on what the x-ray says it will cost anywhere from $600 -1100. Eek.

- Up coming Ireland trip. My sister and I made a pact that when we were both done university we would travel to Ireland and visit the place where my grandfather was born. My tax return will cover this, but I have to book in the next few weeks so I will have to cover the flight before the tax return.

- Haven't kick boxed in two months. Still paying for the membership, I just need to get myself back in the right head space to get there. I am hoping next week once I am better (home sick with the flu)

So all in all things are good. I am starting to enjoy life and do things I have always wanted to do. I just need to make sure that I don't go completely overboard with spending. I know I blew it over Christmas but its better late than never right?!?

So all in all things are really good. I hope the new year is being great to everyone here!!!

Bex - You are on the right track overall, but it is amazing how much the animals cost. Vet bill for annual shots was $259, and one needs surgery for a fatty mass on her chest. We just cannot afford it, she seems happy and is 12 years old, so I am thinking she has gone this far... Right now we are going in reverse by about $2000 a month with my business - and NO PAY for me!! LOL this is SO HARD and so terrible on my mental state. I know it takes 3 years to start a business, and I should be in the black by summer, but you just feel guilty at every turn. The kickboxing will help you feel better about everything. SO glad to hear your job is better. I know that was really stressing you out and I missed your leaving. How did they take it? I know you were pulling work for more than a few people and they will have a heck of a time replacing you. -Marie

I went through this last month. I want to write we are doing fantastic this month...but...we are off to IKEA bc today we start re-doing the entire boys room. This is really a need though - long story. You are not in debt! You are saving for retirement! You are doing great there :)

Ireland is beautiful. When I was backpacking across Europe (for $20 Cdn a day!), I felt my homesickness disappear in Ireland. It looked a lot like here and the people were just amazing!!!! You deserve the trip and it will be a trip of a lifetime for you and your sister.

Hey Karen, I totally hear you about the new house spending. It's always so hard when you move because you want to make everything perfect!! The trip to Ireland isn't cheap. We are doing a tour for people 18-35 (I have a few more years until I am too old for this group lol) For 8 nights it was $1200. That includes all breakfasts and 4 dinners, hotels, travel within Ireland and some tours. The flight was also $1200 but I used my points to get $250 off. So in total I am into this for about $2200. Now I just need to save up for spending money !!!

I feel like one too but not totally my fault.  In my accountability list I wrote about the new eyeglasses for my dh, and the dog. Well, we had a big ER visit for her on Tuesday. It turns out it was pancreatitis.  Cry Between everything now it's almost $1000 so for the first time in months our checking is low until I get paid next Wednesday. My dh only gets paid once a month and it's at the end of the month.  So I may actually have to transfer some from savings (regular savings not EF savings) to get us by.

Sounds like overall you are doing well.

Just a speed bump on your financial journey.  I mean, look how much you are putting towards the mortgage.  So the dollar amount in your account is somewhat relative, KWIM?  Poing being, you have a large enough resource to cover everything.

I am still confused whether you are still in hour house, or in the condo.

Boy and I ever with you here! Since the new house I have spent a whole bunch of cash. And we don't even get in there until the summer. The spending has hit a bit of a lull right now but once we get in there, it could get out of control again. I am trying to make a list of wants and needs. We will save up and get each thing.

My husband and I have ALWAYS wanted to go to Ireland!!!! after we get settled in the house, my empty house savings account is going to be a vacation account. If I have to put $5 a month in it...we will get there eventually! Do you have a budget for this trip? Any idea on the cost of it? I just have no idea what to even shoot for?

Bex, I think we all go through periods of a bit of excessive spending, obviously most of it did or we wouldn't be where we are! You know you have done it, you have made a conscious decision to reign it in and haven't taken on any new debt. That in and of itself is a huge step!
