An Interesting Experiment!!!

Well the results are in....

Two weeks ago I embarked on an experiment to see if I could guesstimate how I was spending my money and staying somewhat within budget.

For the past 14 months I have meticulously tracked spending down to the penny and got tired of the drudgery of it.

lol :) i did the exact same thing for years! yes, years. and to save my life or limbs i could not tell you where that money went.

i keep track of my spending in a baby notebook i keep in my purse and round up the nearest whole dollar to keep the math really easy so i cannot avoid doing it.

We use Quicken to track our spending, and I couldn't live without it, at least because I would never know what exactly we have in our checking accounts and what bills have been paid, not paid, etc.

We track everything but our Blow Money - Dh and I both get $200 a month to do whatever with, so we track that AS blow money.
Our issue was spending on the kids, now the kids are in college and it is amazing that I still have $80 in my wallet sometimes on payday, before I get money out for the period.

I have been tracking for 4 years now.

I actually don't track it per say.

All of my money goes somewhere when I get paid and there isn't usually much left over if any because I tell the money where to go. Some to sinking funds to pay things later, some to bills, some to mortgage, some to savings. I don't really ever feel the need to use a credit card because I know there won't be anything to pay it off with.

I use a zero based budget.

I don't track every penny that I spend, but I'm on a cash only basis, so when it's gone, it's gone.
