I just wanted to update everyone with my job status and such, just because we keep hearing on the news that there are so many unemployed out there.

I like the idea of having more than one income. Then all your eggs are not in one basket. I hope you find something with low overhead and the clients roll in! This sounds right up your alley.

Good luck, Marie. It sounds like you're opening up some possibilities. Most of all, I detect a new enthusiasm in the way you talk about your new path, so that's a very good sign.

I'm going to be in the next cycle of the academic job market (starting in October, ending sometime in the spring). My search is going to be nation-wide, but I'm realizing that there are only some places I could live in. So I may have to look at a new career, especially since the academic job market hasn't recovered. It's really too bad. My form of intelligence is quite suited for this, whereas I'm pretty bad at other sorts of smarts.

Hi,

To answer your question, no, the economy has not improved near me and I sent out ALOT of resumes in a year with no reponse so I don't think those who are complaining about finding a job are "spouting BS".

A couple more tips, I send cover letters with an inset table showing how my skills match exactly with their requirements, using their terminology, and ordering - so it gets picked up by scanners more easily. I also worked to keep up on more current skills, so marketing includes social media certification, etc.
My resume also has accomplishments for every job, not just skills, so it shows how I have brought change to companies.
My HR consultants here have said they are seeing people land jobs at all levels this year, and the stats say the same with some gains. Actually older men are now seeing more success as manufacturing is ramping up again.

Hi Marie,

Glad to hear things are going well for you! I'm guessing that if you become self employed there are a ton of tax breaks that may mean you don't actually have to gross as much income to net out the same? I always saw that as one of the big benefits of being self employed. Glad to hear things are going well!

I'm self-employed, and the only difference in taxes for me is that I can set aside up to $49K per year in an IRA, much higher than those who have employers, since obviously my retirement is 100% self-funded.

As a self employed person, you can choose how you take income and move some income to a lower tax bracket just by moving it from wages to profit. You can also deduct expenses, like cell phones and other items used for your business.
There are many breaks if you work with your accountant to identify and pursue them.
Pursuing them can be more time consuming and time is money, especially when self employed as you wear many hats.
DH brought home 50% more when self employed than he does now as an employee, that is a huge difference.
