Has anyone else caught "Million Dollar Neighbourhood" on OWN? If not, the premise is they go to a city (Bowmanville Ontario) and challenge the town to increase their net worth by $1 million over 10 weeks. They have a bunch of challenges and do more than what I'm posting, but  the premise is any money that you save that you would otherwise spend (necessary or not) counts toward the increase in net worth. While I find it interesting, I thought it would be a neat challenge on this board.

So I challenge you all. Let's start a "savings" thread. Everytime you save money on something tell us what it is and add it to our running tally. It could be savings by finding something cheaper (i.e. lowering your insurance counts as savings) or by NOT doing something (i.e. skipping your normal starbucks trip is saving the $3 you would spend). It can also be savings from replacing things (i.e. instead of eating out eat at home and figure out what you saved). Ler's see how long it takes us to get to $10K saved!

I'll start. This weekend I skipped my cleaning lady and cleaned my house myself. Savings $50

BF and I skipped our usual Friday night out. We usually spend at least $80 together so my savings would be half ($40)

Bex total: $90

Running Tally $90

WTG Norma. Your savings total was $52.92 I also saved $10 last night. My flight back was delayed so I didn't get home until 8:00. I was actually IN LINE at the drive through by my house and forced myself by pure will power to get out of line and eat one of my frozen meals!!! So with Norma's savings and mine we are at 552.92 Keep it up DSG!

OK, ever since we filed for Chapter 13, I have been a serious  penny pincher.  I'm always looking for something free or cheap or recycle something around the house.  So here's what I've done so far this week.

Free Samsung Bluetooth device for my phone to replace the old one that was going bonkers $29.99 & a free Microfiber cleaning cloth $12.59, both FREE using my US Cellular Good customer points.  I got 5% off my groceries with a coupon Ingle's mailed me for their 50 anniversay sale Saved $8.34 and I had a $2 off store coupon for goods.  Total to date $52.92.  I'm expecting a free OPI Nicole Red nail polish any day for using codes from my Special K Snack Crisp bars.  I'll total that in when it comes in the mail.

There is a plant sale at the local high school this weekend.  The prices are descent but not the best.  Last week I got 3 inch pots of impatients w/ three plants  in them for .50 cents a piece at Home Depot.  The schools price is $1.85 for 4 and the Farmers Co-op was $1.88.  I did purchase two tomato plants yesterday for $3.98 for both and 2 pkgs. of zinna seeds for a varity that I've been wanting to try.  I have a gazillion zinna seeds but not the thumblina ones that I purchased for $1.39.  Hope they grow!

Also I joined my hubby on a business trip and we are staying at a fancy hotel that has a buffet breakfast for $18.since our room has a refrigerator, I packed boiled eggs, cheese, homemade bread and fruit from home ( I had to clean out my frig anyway since we were going to be gone). So I figure I saved about $90. Running total =$490.

H has  been needing new sweaters for work but I refuse to pay full price for nice namebrand sweaters.  I waited until the last day before Macy's pulls their winter inventory off the floor.  I got five sweaters for $45.25, saving $278. Now hubby is set for next year.

If that counts than the running total is $400

The Lord only knows how money has been flying thru my bank accounts lately.  We got out tax refund of $374 and decided to do the required maintenance on the car & truck.  The car needed two tires.  So I was able to get  them for $240, got the oil changed at the dealer for $13 (big coupon $20, but not counting that in this thread) and purchased the brakes at a discount through the company I work for's account at OReilly's.  We got the oil changed in the truck $26, I purchased the oil, filter, fuel filter, wipers, two fog light bulbs and some cleaner for $158.  Now I rang over a box of nails spilled by an unknown source and had to purchase two new tires for the truck....tune of $440 ....OUCH!!!!!!

I've been really good at getting great deals lately, so let me see what I can come up with this coming week.  I'll report back on Monday, Apr. 15th.

Ok well you inspired me. My husband has spent a fortune on tools lately so I need to save where I can.

I baked bread yesterday and borrow eggs from my MIL. I gave her a pedicure on the weekend so she was more than happy to part with some eggs. I saved, probably $3.00.

I was browsing a party lite magazine(candles) from a gal that I always buy from. I love their stuff! But I got to thinking I have so much and I'm just going to use it instead of buying. I saved $25.  I was so close to buying what I wanted and it was on sale! I just don't get as many opportunities to burn them because of the baby and I am so tired I go to bed when it is light out!!!! Perhaps next fall I will treat myself to a couple?

I made chili and usually put in a lot of meat, but I used half the meat and put more beans in that were on sale so I saved about $4.00 that way. The family didn't even notice so I will be doing that from now on! So that is a continued savings! And they are not suffering, home made bread, and yummy home made chili! They are doing just fine!

I will keep trying!

Shall we play a game? Global Thermonuclear War?

Oh, wait, this is not that dorky teen movie from the 80s.

Hmm, I'll see what I can do. I don't have cleaning ladies, though, so it'd be interesting to see where I can save.
