I have to agree with demontespan - I don't think giving money, no matter how much, to a neighbour is a good way to "save". You have no recourse if the neighbour spends it. You have no proof the neighbour owes you anything. Why not just put your 5$ bills in the bank, or in an envelope, or something like that? I realize that 5$ isn't much but it would add up over time.

I would never put any amount of money that I wanted kept or saved anywhere but in a bank or credit union (or maybe my mattress ... the interest rates today really do suck).

I think the tea idea is lovely. DD and I keep a tea journal and try new teas as a little hobby. We use the fancy teacups which our elderly neighbour, Miss Hodgins, left to us when she passed away.

I'm afraid I agree with the others on the $5 saving idea. Not only would I be hesitant to hand over the cash to my neighbour, but I would have diffculties putting aside every $5 bill I receive. In the course of a week, I must receive at least $30 in $5 bills as change. It is the most frequent denomination I receive. Saving that large of an amount every week would significantly impace my budget. Personnally, I would try it with a smaller denomination.

I don't know when is the last time faith in goodness got anyone out of debt, or any financial guru advocates giving your money to a neighbor.
