Reminder why I'm doing this :)

So I had to take my car in today to get the winter tires put on, a service, alignment etc. etc. etc.

Total bill came to $500.

A year ago that would have been enough to send me over the edge. Today, I knew it was coming so I had put money aside for it and it will be completey paid off.

I guess this is why we do this . . . so little emergencies don't turn into really really big ones!

Yep, that's what it's all about Bex! Good for you for anticipating the bill. I tell you ... my life is so much better since I started having sinking funds for expenses. Like you, I'm finding that the little emergencies don't freak me out or become larger due to lack of funds. Sinking funds are the best!!

I'm seriously thinking of getting a car now, as my office location is moving in the new year. I'm "test-driving" a new budget that would include a car for the next few months to see how my finances will be impacted and then I can make a judgement about whether to take the plunge. I would love a little baby-blue car just like yours!!

Kate that's awesome!

Make sure to call around and get some quotes for car insurance too. Most will give you an online quote if you assume what car you want!

Where is the office moving too?

My office isn't moving far, just over to the Quebec side, to an office in Gatineau. The problem is that the Quebec bus that will take me to work only runs every half-hour and takes a very scenic route. Additionally, my Ottawa bus only runs every half-hour and I can't seem to figure out a schedule where the transfer point is at the same time. My bus-commute will now take about 1.5 to 2 hours each way -- a staggering 3-4 hours daily! Before his accident, X-DH drove me from my door to the door of my new office, and it took 20 minutes. So it's very, very frustrating that I will be sitting for lengthy bus rides for such a short distance.

I have to add that OC Transpo (which I've dubbed "No-see Transpo") is so much worse since the massive cutbacks in September. I'm finding myself increasingingly frustrated on weekend trying to run errands.

Anyway, like I said, I'm test-driving a new budget starting in January 2012. And I'm actively looking for a job that pays more so that I can afford a car. I 've got to find a way to make this work!

Thanks for the tip on shopping around for insurance!

Oh yeah, a two to three hour commute each day is not okay :(
I personally found TD meloche monnex was the cheapest, but you need to be affiliated with some group. I think Johnson's has ties to the union (maybe) so that may help?
I love the idea of living on a trial budget to see if it's doable :) Make sure in your trial budget to include sinking funds for the car maintenance and repairs, insurance, car payment and GAS!!!
