Hi,
I'm Norma, I'm 52, work 40 hrs. a week and recently have had some health problems.

My name is Emily and I'm just starting on this difficult journey and hoping I have the strength to get through it. We have over $40k in credit card debt plus a car loan (less than $6k), a student loan ($1800) and now about $1k in hospital bills since I had surgery this June.
I'm Karen. I have been in debt probably most of my life but decided to get real in 2008 when I joined the board. I was a newly divorced mom of two that had to start taking responsibility. I had $30,000 in debt on a personal line of credit living in an apartment. I
I joined about a month ago when I discovered that I'd sunk more deeply into debt than I imagined, so I'm relatively new here. I've spent most of my life in school (for your reference point, I'm 37), and lived on credit cards. After I started working, I began making a dent in the pile... until this past year when I got sick and stopped paying attention to my finances. This forum helps me keep track of my spending because I have to respond to all the virtually anonymous people here. Somehow that's easier than talking to people I actually know.
I can't remember exactly when I joined this board. I think it was around end of 2007 or early 2008. I had just graduated from my masters program, had a pile of student loan debt ($38K yikes!) a car loan, and a new mortgage on my very first house. To top it off, I added almost $10k In CC debt because of all the costs associating with moving that I never thought of (like a moving truck!) Oh, and I was making 55K a year to service all of this debt!
Fast forward 4.5 years. A new car loan (long story!) but much lower (280/ month, 0% interest projected payoff date Jan 2015)
CC debt will be GONE tomorrow (when my cheque clears . . . YAY).
Student loan debt down to $ 24.5 K
My goal is to have everything gone by the time my car payment is up in 2015!
More importantly however, I have significantly increased my earnings (almost 30K) by switching jobs and moving.
I have also starting retirement savings and am happy to say that 10% of my pay (6% me, 4% match) and so far have just under $40K. I am planning on upping this by a % when my next raise comes in (assuming one does!)
All in all I'm very proud of where I am, and think I'm doing okay for 30. I admit I haven't been as agressive as I could/should be, but part of it is that I want to live my life a bit while I have no responsibilities (read DH or Kids!!)
