My husband and I recently became debt free except for our house (hooray) and now we're making a new budget and figuring out what we can put into investments.

Perhaps I missed something? Does that mean you have triplets?!?! Oh My!
I would be realistic here and decide what is more important to you, private school or secondary eduction. Since you don't have money set aside already for private school could you really afford to do both for 3 kids at once. That being said, i would pick a number for each child(say 5, 10, or 15 thousand each or whatever number) and try to reach that goal. If you exceed it fine.
