Since my part time job with Subway didn't pan out I decided to start looking at the possibility of just getting one full time job instead of two part time ones. There are some disadvantages to switching jobs in my line of work but in the long run it can be worthwhile.
I have talked to a couple of places but I interviewed at one salon this evening that is about six blocks from my apartment. One of their stylists used to work with me at my current salon and I guess she's been talking me up there for a while. They REALLY want me. I would be the only manicurist there and commission starts at 42% (I am making 35% now and I am capped out). I would also have a lot of say in setting the prices, deciding what services to offer, and which products to use.
The biggest problem with moving jobs, and this would be the case anywhere I went, is that you don't make much at all to start off because it takes time to build up clientele. I'm pretty busy at my current job, but since I'm only working PT and will be going to FT it may not be too big of a drop. Unfortunately it's impossible to predict.
So I told them I would let them know within a week, but I'm 99% sure at this point I'm going to take it.

I'm just a lurker, but had to come out and reply because I'm a hair dresser and was curious:)
There's nothing prohibiting me from taking clientele with me but I am currently working in another city and I'd be shocked if anyone was willing to travel that far. They also pretty much all have other technicians they sometimes see because I am only there three days a week and tend to fill up fast.
There are very few salons that do nails in my current neighborhood so I am feeling like it shouldn't take too long to fill up. They are planning on doing some promoting too.
Congratulations on the new job! Sure, it's a bit of a gamble in the beginning, but it sounds like a good bet. I also sense some excitement in your post, which says to me you want that job.
Quick question: so hairstylists/beauty people get an hourly wage and a percentage of each client they see?
Interesting it is a percentage? I had not heard of that in an independent salon. I always paid my hairdresser directly.
Regardless, just the think of the time and gas you will save!

I booth rent, so I am 100% self employed.
DF sent me a text at work today and said to take the job if I wanted it and not to worry about the money. I know he can afford to take on a larger share of the rent and utilities if he has to, but I don't like to ask him to. It makes me feel like I am not pulling my weight.

Concentrating on one position could help that position grow.
You said "they are planning on doing some promoting too" I WOULD NEVER let my fate rest 100% in someone else's hands. Be sure to have flyers ready for every person who has their hair done for a discount on initial services or special bonus offer, promote a spring pedicure deal, be sure to note that you are now taking PROM appointments for groups of girls (give flyers to any young girls you see in your shop who go to the local high school and tell them if they can get 5 friends in they can get a Free something or other.)
Put up a poster for your first 25 customers who refer a friend get some type of bonus too.
Also, have your best customers put up some ratings on Google, Yelp, etc. so you get a good reputation out there online.
I would market yourself like you were going to town on it and NEVER ever let your fate rest in the hands of someone else!!
Consider reading or taking a course or reading about BUILDING YOUR PERSONAL BRAND, so someday you can have your own shop with people working for you!!
You could build a phenomenal business!!
