Stuck in government shutdown limbo
Sat, 10-05-2013 - 12:27pm

Hi all,

It's been a while again. Just here to vent.  I'm a government contractor who works onsite so that means if the government shuts down I'm shut down too. So I've been out of work since Tuesday afternoon. I just applied yesterday for unemployment, but hopefully by the time it processes I'll be back at work. Unlike the feds who most probably will get retroactive pay, we contractors won't.  Thankfully we actually have some savings this time around. I have $1k in my immediate savings and about 2 months salary in my emergency funds.  Plus my dh now has a "real" job which doesn't pay that much but every bit helps.  So I think we will be okay until Oct. 17 or before whenever the House finally gets their act together.

Thanks for listening!

Really sorry to hear that. I'm in Canada but the articles I read basically said - they'll get retro pay so it is a non-event. Obviously there are people being affected to so I'm not sure how they can write that!

Good thing you had the emergency funds. We have employment insurance (unemployment pay) but it takes 9 weeks to get it. So it is important to be prepared.

Hopefully they start doing their jobs and get this sorted out.

Sorry to hear you are affected. You have my sympathies. I hope we emerge from this stupid mess soon. I don't get why people like you are being penalized. It makes no sense at all.

Thank goodness for you planning and having some funds on standby.  This is so unnecessary.  I think everyone's pay in government should be suspended until this is settled.
