Oh boy --- in this season of merriment -- tempers get short!
I did all gift cards this year, and the kids were fine with it.
Sounds like normal control issues and resistance to change. Why not keep with the $10 gift and let everyone get what they want to buy? Seems gifts cards are another controlling mechanism that don't allow those who are creative to get that side of them out?
My mom got upset on peirogi day - well she was over tired and went up to sleep for an hour and came back down much better. She had stayed up all night getting things ready to make the little dough balls, and was just over tired. And like Kate's sister, she is pretty controlling, so when things don't go here way, she lacks the management prowess and soft human nature skills to gather people to her way of thinking.
We still buy for everyone in DH's family and enjoy it.
I guess I can consider myself one of the lucky ones.

In many ways, I'm thankful that my family is small.
I haven't spent Christmas with family in probably about five or six years. But I can tell you that temper flares even when you're by yourself!!!
It would not be festive if it wasn't for the drama LoL! Try to take things with a grain of salt. I am thankful to have family in any shape or form because some people don't have any at all to celebrate with. Kids can look forward to gift cards using their imagination of what they will buy. Trust me on this one.
