We cruise a lot and Carnival does do auto tipping because people were not tipping at all and these people did great service for the tips. You can always ask to have that changed on your ships bill as well. We are cruising again in spring 2012 and I adore it. For us it is cheaper than most trips because entertainment and food is included. -Marie
We budget at least $10 per person per day in tips, plus if our cabin steward is good we might throw an extra $20 for him and maybe more for our waiter. My DH enjoys his rum and cokes as well, and we usually budget $500 per person for a 7 day trip for adults, $250 for the kids. If we do excursions it might be a bit more, as we do a snorkeling trip and usually a boat trip along with the lower cost beach trips. Look online for the excursions then you can also shop them on your own to see if you can find trips sold direct, but you need to watch to see if they are reputable. We found a great bike company in St. Croix as they guy was from New Hampshire and we saved $15 per person over what the ship was charging for the same excursion. I love cruising as there is always TONS to do. -Marie
I absolutely love cruising!! What I have found is you can spend as much or as little as you want. We always limit our excurisons to one a trip. Last time the kids picked zip-lining. We are not big drinkers and arent into the fancy dinners. We had GREAT food just eating in the dining room. Steak, lobster, caviar, etc... Our last cruise we pre payed our tips and our total bill for 3 was $400. We are not big drinkers though. Had a few, but those add up quickly. Have fun!!! Can't wait to go again. One tip I have is you can bring your own sodas/water in your luggage. Soda is not free on carnival/royal caribbean. That saved us alot of money too.
Thanks for sharing! I have never gone on a cruise, but one thing I do know is I HATE surprises and unknowns. I have learned so many things the hard way even with the little bit of traveling I have done.
It is cool though that you did splurge a bit for your annivesary. Those things are important to do once in a while. (hopefully saved for, of course)
