worrisome on one front....fab on the other

Hi Gang......

On the worrisome front is that my consumer debt is at an all time high of just over 58k....(highest ever).

But some great news as well......

I have been courted for the last few weeks by a private boutique consultancy firm that does my line of work in the private sector.  I work in a public/private mix right now and many of you are aware of some of the struggles but also the longer history of loving my job.  I decided that I could not give up my benefits as I have had a couple of bouts of serious medical illness in the past and also have a stellar pension plan altho my salary is only middling for my skill set and experience.   But.......

I have arranged to be a contractor for this consultancy firm which would allow me to take on some of the extra work that they are not able to handle.I subletted a small furnished office space from them for 275/mo.  I am not guaranteed any work but they estimate that at this point I will get 4-6 hours a week and can build up to 15 to maybe even 20 hours at the high end.  They are offering me a very nice  rate of $83/hour so that makes me happy. The only issue is that there are tight deadlines and so when a file comes I will have to work on it to completion pronto.  I start in September.

I am hoping this extra income will help me put a major dent in my debt.

Good luck, Duke. I'm also carrying high consumer debt. While some things are looking up professionally, my future is uncertain. I am not convinced that my luck has run out, but there may be more hardship ahead before the sun will finally come out. If I'm wrong, then everything I've worked for over the last two decades will be for nothing.

Let us both hope for the best.

Join the party, I had to go into more business debt to fund some marketing efforts.  I will know at the end of the month if they payoff was worth it.

Isn't it so much scarier to go into more debt now, after the 2008 meltdown?

Good job with the new opportunity, Duke.

That is a great opportunity! You are going to smash that debt easily by taking that on. Hopefully it isn't too stressful though.

I feel fortunate that we have been able to pay for my school as we go. The universal bus pass program has eliminated $160/month in transit fares so that really helps. But it is very, very tight and that is already old and tired. LOL.

Good luck and thanks for updating us.

Hi Duke,

It is really good to hear from you!

Sorry to hear the debt has crept up.

Some people may ready and say $275 a month?? Why are you taking on this expense. Well, I think it is great and will be motivational for you to not only take on enough work to pay that expense but open the door to take on a bit more work to chip away at the debt. A second space is so exciting! I know you have had opportunities in the past to do extra design work in people's homes so if this opportunity doesn't work out perhaps that avenue will light up again and you can still make some money.

I know this debt is trouble some to you. You would not come back to visit if it didn't. We are here for you. Now, don't let the beautiful Italian shoes and tempting trips of the world tempt you. It is time to buckle down and get this done. Make now your time. Consider it a gift to yourself to pay this down.

Take care

Good luck!  I think the $275 will be well worth it.  Working from home does have advantages, but many disadvages as well.  I think you are doing the right thing.

Just make sure and take care of yourself so you don't over do it!
