So exciting! So very exciting that I have to share this news with my debt buddies: I got my honorarium from a talk I gave last month. I didn't know how much I was going to get paid, as is the practice in my field. Now it looks like I'll be able to pay for my root canal! Yippeeee! Monkey dance!

So excited for you. Rather annoyed that you didn't what/ if you were getting it, but I'm glad it came!!

Yes, I think it would help if the "business" aspect could be taken care of business-like. So, yes, I agree. But there is just this culture of slighting money. And this is especially bizarre for junior professors, who don't make very much money, and who often have to shell out a lot of their own money to present at conferences.

No, I cannot teach courses online. While I support developing online curriculum, my department is heavily opposed to it. Heck, it's opposed to anything that involves technology, marketing, or some sort of self-promotion. Many people are stuck in the old days.

Extra funds are always awesome, good job to you!
I really don't like the idea that you don't know what the amount will be, though. I have to think about it as not everything should be done solely for remuneration, but part of the issue we have in this country regarding finances is that it is a closet subject. People talk more about sex than money, and maybe it might help if people could be more open?

Are you allowed to also teach online? It seems to me that might be a way for you to make additional income?
