I like your idea of tracking your spending in detail.
Would it make sense to build up a small emergency fund immediately, and then work at paying toward your cc accounts monthly (instead of building up an amount before making a full pay off)?
Welcome back! I've been posting on here since 2000. On and off. Sometimes I am doing better, sometimes worse. Nice to see you again . I am more accountable when I am on here that is for sure.
It sounds like you have a solid plan. See you around here! :)
Besides the debt, do you have a substantial retirement nest egg or a pension plan as well? It might sound weird and unconventional, but knowing what I do know now, I would refinance your house, then stop paying your largest CC bill. Deal with the calls and letters for a while, in the meantime amassing some cash, and then in a few months offer them a payoff on the card. Lets say you owed $15k on the largest card, stop paying it at all, then in 6 months offer them $5,000 to see if they would pay it off and settle it. If you give me the names of the creditors, I can tell you who would be most likely to settle for the most favorable terms as I have seen this work with so many folks through our church. At this point the banks have taken so much money from tax dollars, and our credit scores are created in such a convoluted way, you have to look at all options out there. My email is marketingvirgo at yahoo if I can help off the board.
