Give yourself an allowance?

I've been toying with the idea of giving my husband and I each a weekly "allowance".  I know it may sound silly, but I thought it might be good to give each of us a bit of money that we can spend on whatever we want, without guilt.  Anyone else build this type of expense into their budgets?

I do, I need to up it though and have plans to do that starting October 1st. Right now I give myself $20 a week and that's for coffees, snacks/breakfast/lunches at work if I forget or don't have time to pack one. But I still find myself running out at times or using my debit card for other expenses. DH and I had talked about it a few weeks ago, I tend to spend on the kids, or feel bad when I spend money on me and would put it on my credit card so I didn't have to deal with his disapproval about it, so he said we all know I spend it, just work it into the budget. I'd like to eventually get him on some sort of cash allowance also, but it hasn't happened yet.

I actually never felt guilty about spending money on myself.  I figured I worked for it so I should have the right to spend a reasonable amount.  I never went crazy with spending.

We've each had a monthly allowance for years.  DH's covers his tennis costs including beers after the match, his two weekends away each year with friends, iTunes, music stuff, etc.  Mine covers my personal care products, spiritual direction, retreat weekends, magazines, and books.

If you don't build in this kind of money, you are going to spend it anyway.  Might as well recognize it.

Definitely! Dh used to drive me nuts asking me all the time if he buy this or that (because I did the budget and he didnt' want to wreck all my hard work). Plus, we can just enjoy some mad money which eases life on a budget :)

We get $100 every 15 days (or twice a month). We used to get $10/day or $300 a month each and that was much , much better.
