Does anyone here ever take advantage of layaway programs?  If so, how do you like them?  Do they help you with budgeting?

Don't you have a pay some fee for layaway?  Never done that, nor can I see how it helps with budgeting.  To me budgeting is simply money in vs. money out.

The one and only time I did layaway I was in college in 1982.  It was an awesome satin pant suit for a semi-formal party. :)

I would never do layaway.  I like the concept, but I think it makes sense only if you live in an area with very limited shopping opportunities and no internet access - which is pretty much nobody nowadays.  Why?  Because if you find something great today, chances are good you'll find it again, or something similar, in 3 months when you've saved up the money for it.  It's always better to save the money up for it rather than commit yourself to it months in advance.  By the time it's paid for and you can take it home, it's likely your needs will have changed anyway.

I ended up putting on a layaway this year. Not really for budgeting purposes, but more to keep things out of the house. My boys are way too good at *finding* things I hide! There is no fee unless you cancel the layaway, which I have no intention of doing.

I was just coming to post the same thing Grace. I am getting DH a recliner chair he's been wanting for a while, and I have no where to hide it. He leaves out of town for the holidays to pick his son up 5 days before we do, so I plan to put it on layaway and then go pick it up once he's left town and bring it home.

In these tough times, many might find they do not have enough readily available cash to take a getaway this year. Don't be frustrated. You can now buy them in installments. Why never learn more about https://personalmoneynetwork.com/payday-loans? If you need help making your last payment, get a personal loan.
