Do you have a set amount in your budget for grocery shopping?  If so, how much do you spend each month?  What do you do to make sure you stay within that budget?

Not sure if this is a great way to do it or not, but I try to budget $100 per month for each family member. It can be tight, but with coupons and such, we are able to make it work. Good luck finding out what works best for you and your family.

that's a good goal... we have 5 people so that would be $500 per month. Not sure if I'll be able to get it that low!

I would like to do better at this. However, I think it will be easier when my 20 month is older. She is still in diapers.  So maybe in a year this will improve. Diapers and wipes and diaper genie refils are so expensive!! Also the milk we go through is amazing at this stage.

I try to cook from scratch in most ways, although since I am back working pretty close to full time again it is harder. Using bananas that are turning to make banana bread helps. It is versitile as well as you can use it as a snack or for breakfasts and it is is sort of sweet so if you throw a scoop of ice cream on it, it can be dessert.

I also have trouble tracking it. If I used just one card it would be easier but I tend to use cash to pick up milk and bread if we run out. I need to get better at keeping the receipts for it and getting them from my husband when I send him to do the same.

Still I bet we spend at least  $600 a month for our family in this budget category. Probably more. Sigh, maybe it will get better in a year or so. I'm off to make some beef barley soup using up my veges from the fridge and a little left over roast. It is a new recipe so hopefully it will be tastey!

First, I think we forget that some of our lovely ladies are in Canada when we talk about budgeting a certain dollar amount.

I do budget $500 a month for the 3 of us, but that includes toiletries, sundries, etc.  Pretty much the grocery store and Walmart.    That could reasonbly be cut down to $400, if I worked at it a little harder and my DH was on board.  Food is one thing he is not real big on skimping on.  He works his butt off all day, so although he doesn't expect anything fancy, it does expect plenty of it.  Me and DD14 could live off of half of that.  In fact, since we have separate accounts, he does give me 50% of that $500 budget.

I did great last week.  Matched coupons perfectly with best price at the 3 stores right by my house.  Plus got 5x gas points at Safeway and saved 40cents a gallon on my last fill.
