OK, it is a mild one, but nonetheless...The South is so helpless in ice. We just don't have the equipment to deal with winter storms. Life just sort of stops.
Today's big issue was that school was closed EVERYWHERE except Memphis City and Shelby County public schools, which declared that school would be in session for 3-4 hours so that government funding would not be lost. What a joke. Most teachers reported having 6-8 kids actually show up, and nothing got done because they knew they were leaving. Some schools did not feed the students. I wonder what the cost was, to the taxpayers, of running busses, cranking up utilities, and providing meals (where they did) as opposed to a day of government funds that could have been made up on a day less treacherous to have people on the roads and kids without seatbelts in school busses.
As a working parent, I would have kept my kids home. It's easier to plan for what you KNOW your day will look like than to have to be ready to leave your job to go get your kids in an ice storm because the school has to be open for 4 hours to meet the funding requirements. Ridiculous. Schools here in Mississippi were closed, so my grandkids got an education at the kitchen table with their mom teaching them to play Scrabble.
